Manglik Dosha (Mangal Dosha) is one of the most anxiety-inducing terms in marriage matching. It is real in the tradition — and also widely overstated. Here is a measured view.
How it's determined
Mars (Mangal) placed in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house — traditionally from the Lagna, and also checked from the Moon and Venus — is said to create Manglik Dosha. Its strength depends on which house, Mars's sign and dignity, and aspects.
Cancellations are common
Classical texts list many cancellations (Mangal Dosha Bhanga): Mars in its own or exalted sign, certain house placements, both partners being Manglik, and more. In practice a large share of 'Manglik' charts carry a cancellation — which is why a flat yes/no is misleading.
What it means for marriage
At most it points to handling the Mars energy — intensity, impatience — consciously in partnership. It is not a barrier to a happy marriage, and matching two whole charts matters far more than a single dosha label.
