What your rashi is

In Vedic astrology, your rashi usually means your Moon sign: the sign of the zodiac the Moon occupied at your birth. Most Indian horoscopes and the daily rashifal are read from it.

The Moon moves through a sign in about two and a quarter days, so your date of birth usually settles it. If you were born close to the moment the Moon changed sign, the time decides.

Why it differs from your Western sign

Western astrology reads the Sun sign in the tropical zodiac. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which today sits about 24° behind the tropical one, and reads the Moon. So your rashi is often not the sign a Western horoscope gives you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my rashi?
Enter your date, time and place of birth. The calculator finds the sign the Moon occupied at that moment in the sidereal zodiac, which is your rashi.
Is my rashi the same as my zodiac sign?
Not usually. A Western zodiac sign is the Sun's sign in the tropical zodiac; a Vedic rashi is the Moon's sign in the sidereal zodiac, about 24° behind.
Can I find my rashi without my birth time?
Usually. The Moon stays in a sign for about two and a quarter days. Choose unknown time and the calculator shows every rashi the Moon was in across your birth date, so you can see whether the time matters for you.
What is naam rashi?
Naam rashi is taken from the first syllable of your name. It is a separate convention from your janma (birth) rashi, which comes from the Moon's actual position.
