The rule

Sade Sati is Saturn's passage through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs counted from your Moon sign. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each, so the whole period lasts about seven and a half years.

Saturn in the 4th or 8th sign from the Moon is called Dhaiya (or Kantaka and Ashtama Shani), a shorter period of about two and a half years.

The three phases

The rising phase is Saturn in the 12th from the Moon, the peak is Saturn over the Moon sign itself, and the setting phase is Saturn in the 2nd. Tradition reads it as a period of pressure and restructuring, felt differently depending on the full chart and the running dasha.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sade Sati?
Sade Sati is the roughly 7½ years Saturn takes to move through the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from your Moon sign.
How do I know if Sade Sati is running for me?
It depends only on your Moon sign and where Saturn is now. The check finds your Moon sign from your birth details and compares it with Saturn's current sign.
What is Shani Dhaiya?
Dhaiya is Saturn's transit through the 4th or the 8th sign from your Moon sign, about two and a half years each.
Is Sade Sati always bad?
No. Tradition associates it with pressure and restructuring, but how it is felt depends on Saturn's role in your own chart and your running dasha.
