Nakshatra and pada

The zodiac is divided into 27 nakshatras of 13°20′ each, and every nakshatra into four padas of 3°20′. Your birth nakshatra and pada come from the Moon's exact longitude at birth.

The Moon moves through a nakshatra in about a day, so the birth time matters more here than for your rashi.

Why it matters

The lord of your birth nakshatra starts your Vimshottari dasha sequence, and how far the Moon had travelled through it sets how much of that first dasha was left at birth. Nakshatras are also the basis of kundli matching.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my birth nakshatra?
Enter your date, time and place of birth. The calculator takes the Moon's sidereal longitude at that moment and finds which of the 27 nakshatras, and which of its four padas, it falls in.
What is a nakshatra pada?
Each nakshatra is split into four quarters of 3°20′ called padas. Together the 27 nakshatras make 108 padas, nine to each rashi.
Can I find my nakshatra without my birth time?
Sometimes. The Moon changes nakshatra about once a day. Choose unknown time to see every nakshatra the Moon was in across your birth date.
How does my nakshatra affect my dasha?
The ruling planet of your birth nakshatra is the first mahadasha in your Vimshottari sequence; the rest follow in a fixed order.
